Being able to participate in manager meetings on a weekly basis to know what is store up to in the next upcoming weeks.
The training on how to sell - very useful for any career path.
What I wish was different
85% of this internship is you selling on the sales floor/department store. Its really challenging especially because you are paid on commission. I wish there was less selling and more "retail management" like they said the internship was going to be.
Advice
Be confident and sell, sell, sell.

What I liked
The team I worked with and the atmosphere was very welcoming. Also, I was always given a challenge to further my understanding of our POS system.

Advice
Be yourself in the interview process as Nordstrom’s looks for individuality. Also, do not be afraid to ask questions throughout the process as they also love people who are devoted to becoming a team member at their store.

June - September 2019 • Austin, TX
What I liked
Overall I loved the experience I was gaining because I was able to work with great people who welcomed questions about how the business itself works and not just trying to sell products.
What I wish was different
My schedule was not very consistent through the summer and as someone who enjoys routine I would like to have a consistent schedule next summer whether it is at Nordstrom or in a business application internship.
Advice
Don't be afraid to ask questions, Nordstrom is bar far the best place I've ever worked, so my advice would be to of course work hard but also enjoy the process.

Logistics Processor
June 2019 • Tigard, OR
What I liked
The management at Nordstrom was amazing. The job was fairly easy, yet so entertaining. Looking at all the new inflow of product everyday was great (not so much for my bank account). I loved their flexibility with breaks and lunches, if it had been a long busy day at work, management would offer incentives and extra breaks to those who needed it.
What I wish was different
The one thing I did not enjoy about Nordstrom was the attitudes from other co-workers in the sales departments to those working in stock/fulfillment. They would often look down on you and push you to the side for no reason at all. Management took awhile to fix this issue, but on the upside it eventually got better.
Advice
My advice to anyone wanting to work at Nordstrom is to apply to any department! They are so flexible within their departments and always want to see you succeed, whether that being moving up the ladder or simply going to a different department to try something new out.

Apparel Salesperson
June - August 2019 • Cincinnati, OH
What I liked
I liked having the opportunity to enhance my customer service skills. It was also an opportunity to get comfortable speaking and engaging with strangers on a daily basis. It gave me the opportunity to learn how to sell myself because it was also a commission job
What I wish was different
I wish I had a different manager. My culture of the job was centered around competitiveness for sales so I wasn’t engaged with my coworkers.
Advice
Working in retail is not easy, but don’t be ashamed to get this experience. I felt bad about not having an internship geared toward my major, but I realize now how much this job helped my communication skills.

June - September 2019 • Palo Alto, CA
What I liked
Pay is commission-based! During the summer there's a huge sale, which means more opportunities for sales.
It is very customer service orientated, which is fun and engaging if you like talking to people.
20% discount on Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack. It is also fast-paced, competitive, and goal-oriented.
What I wish was different
A lot of people return clothes, which takes a hit to your commission.
Advice
Don't be so competitive that you ruin relationships with coworkers.

June - August 2019 • Irvine, CA
What I liked
I liked working on a draw-commission structure where we would receive commission if it surpassed our hourly earnings. This was a great incentive but I also enjoyed working in an environment where your coworkers feel like your friends.
What I wish was different
I don't wish anything was different.
Advice
I would advise any people who want to work at Nordstrom that it can be difficult if you struggle with interpersonal communications and multitasking. At the surface, it looks like a simple job but it's a lot of work which makes it more rewarding and teaches you a lot about being in a fast-paced, customer-oriented environment.

They were a very strong company with valued engraved so deeply you couldn’t help but enjoy it. They took extremely good care of their interns and made sure we had one of the best summers ever.
What I wish was different
I wish I would’ve been more confident in my selling and taken more initiative on cross selling.
Advice

What I liked
I loved the environment created by the people involved. The atmosphere was friendly, inviting, hard-working, and there was a lot of neat apparel!
What I wish was different
The job was more or less enjoyable; management was always either strict or laid back so finding the rhythm when things start picking up was probably the most difficult part.
