What I liked

I liked the culture of the firm and the work life-balance was perfect. There were some days every week that the staffs could work from their home. Some of the staffs were really helpful and supportive. The environment was very friendly. It has been a great learning experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had access to all the training resources that the full-time employee had and I wish that getting into system and the delivery of applications that was required for operations was much easier and simpler.

Advice

Learn as much as you can. Enjoy your time in the firm. Do your best and never hesitate to ask questions and connect with people around. Be accountable for your actions and be courteous. It will take you long distance.

You have to do a lot of work outside of work hours if you want to be successful. 10 weeks is not a long time to complete a project.

What I wish was different

Wish there was more opportunity to select or show preference for what project you work on.

Advice

Come into the experience with open eyes and a curiosity to learn - there are over 10 different departments so you will not know which you are joining until you already accept the offer.

A lot of driving around Michigan, seeing new cities and different types of people is always cool. Cold-calling on businesses has its ups and downs regarding how accepting they are of sales offers.

I wish there would have been more office work and less field work.

What I liked

I enjoyed working on my team, and my manager was great. I was introduced to something I had no experience with and ended up loving it.

What I wish was different

After your initial project is done, there weren't any mechanisms for assigning new ones. There ended up being a lot of sitting around. They say that next year it will be better though. Also, we had some housing issues which is understandable when you are living with three other strangers.

Advice

Be assertive with your manager. If you are bored, tell your manager. They want to work with you and help you succeed, but they don't know unless you tell them. When I approached my manager for more work, within 10 minutes I had a new assignment.

Everyone I met was incredibly knowledgeable and willing to help anytime any of the interns had questions. We had our own project and made a measurable impact on the company.

What I wish was different

There was a lot of down time in the beginning because systems access took so long. I wish there had been more to do to fill the time.

Advice

Go in with an open mind and try to learn the big picture. At Verizon, it's easy to get lost in the details because they have such a large operation, but seeing how everything works together is one of the coolest parts of the process.
