Intern

October - November 2017 • Manassas, VA

What I liked

The supervisors/leads were all so nice, and helpful seeing it was my first time doing any sort of campaign work. In general, the staff was very young so it was very laid back, and casual making it a nice first internship, and introduction to doing internships. On top of that, I was able to make a different in an area I was super passionate about!

What I wish was different

It was always very unclear as to how long my shifts would last, and almost every single time I went into the office I ended up staying much longer than I would think I was going to. This was especially a hassle seeing how long it took me to get to the office.

Advice

I would just say to make sure to be assertive, and make sure that your needs are being met!

Field Intern

September 2017 • Manassas, VA

What I liked

I loved applying what I was learning in the classroom to real world experiences on the field and connecting to voters

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time to juggle both classes and the internship because at times it was stressful but it wasn't too bad if you managed time efficiently

Advice

I would advise asking questions and putting yourself out there because you can find yourself in an amazing situation

Lead Field Organizer

May - August 2018 • Manchester, NH

What I liked

I loved getting to know the inner workings of a political campaign and learning about everything that has to happen to win an election. The work I did was fulfilling, and I felt that we were genuinely making a difference in NH politics. Everybody I worked with was super passionate about our cause and had a lot of wisdom to share. In addition, my field directors have been very proactive in finding future jobs for all their interns; since my internship ended, I have gotten several calls from other progressive organizations looking for field organizers because of my boss's recommendations. All in all, this internship was an amazing experience that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in progressive politics.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had gotten a better idea of what this internship was going to look like before I started. Although I ended up really enjoying my experience, I didn't go into it with a clear idea of the role I would play or the responsibilities I would have.

Advice

This kind of internship is very hard work, but it's incredibly rewarding. You need to be ready to work some crazy hours and put in a lot of effort, but you're going to be surrounded by people just as dedicated and passionate as you are.
