Advisor, Emergency Nutrition

Summary
Save the Children is recruiting an Emergency Nutrition Advisor who will provide institutional, technical and strategic guidance and support to Save the Children’s (SC) global work in emergency nutrition. The Advisor will work closely with colleagues across the Save the Children Global Movement to provide technical leadership to design state-of-the-art nutrition programs and provide technical assistance and first response to humanitarian needs, promoting high quality emergency nutrition programming globally. The Advisor will also represent Save the Children US (SCUS) in the broader international nutrition community, assist and support other SCUS teams, as appropriate, and collaborate with Save the Children International (SCI) in defining and advancing SCI’s global nutrition agenda.
 
What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
Technical Leadership and Support in Emergency Nutrition (50%)
  • Provide senior level technical expertise and oversight to support the application of evidence-based emergency nutrition interventions and adherence to quality standards and benchmarks
  • Deploy to Category 1 and 2 emergencies, as needed, to lead emergency nutrition responses (including leading rapid assessments and surveys, devising response plans and master budgets, mobilizing resources, overseeing program implementation, recruitment and procurement);
  • Provide remote backstopping to Category 1 and 2 humanitarian crisis, reviewing response strategies, sector program plans, supporting recruitment, advocacy/communications/ media strategies.
  • Work with SCI country offices to strengthen capacity to design and deliver quality emergency nutrition programming through mentorship, trainings, technical workshops and circulation of evidence-based program standards, guidance, tools and learning
  • Collaborate with nutrition colleagues, more broadly, to ensure emergency nutrition activities are consistent with country strategic directions, and strive toward integration with other sectors and smooth transition from emergency to development.
Program Learning and Innovation (40%)
  • Articulate key program innovation and learning priorities in humanitarian nutrition, especially related to key gaps in the evidence base for programming, and the steps needed to inform policy, and translate policy into practice.
  • Lead the design, testing, and evaluation of innovations to advance emergency nutrition programming, specifically in areas including the Prevention and Management of Acute Malnutrition and Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies (IYCF-E)
  • Identify, document and promote the up-take of innovative, field-based emergency nutrition best practices
  • Share SC best practices externally and introduce new evidence-based best practices into SC global and country level work.
  • Support monitoring and evaluation, with a focus on sound data collection, analysis, and interpretation for improving the quality of humanitarian response.
  • Participate in technical meetings and facilitate learning opportunities as delegated.
Resource Mobilization (5%)
  • Support resource development through provision of technical support to the development of quality emergency nutrition project proposals and contribution to the definition of fundraising priorities
  • Develop and sustain donor and partner relationships, including with academic institutions and technical personnel
Humanitarian Coordination (5%)
  • Participate in internal and external humanitarian and nutrition-focused coordination fora and contribute to strengthening global partnerships in emergency nutrition
  • Contribute significantly to the review and/or development of humanitarian technical standards, standard operating procedures, program policies and tools for emergency nutrition

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 7-10 years' experience in international nutrition programming with emphasis on emergency and fragile contexts.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience required.
  • Experience and knowledge in a variety of emergency nutrition programming areas required (ie – prevention and management of wasting, IYCF-E, and emergency nutrition monitoring and evaluation approaches)
  • Expertise in research methodologies and experience in designing and leading operations research and learning projects in emergency nutrition required
  • Willingness to travel approximately 35% of the time; Willingness and ability to work in insecure and hardship environments;
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully working across multiple sectors,
  • Fluency in written and oral English required.
  • Excellent writing, oral and visual presentation skills; training skills
  • Proven teamwork, partnering skills (facilitating dialogue and communications across diverse sectors, institutions, and geographic administrative levels)
  • Ability to assess priorities and competently complete a variety of activities with a high level of accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ability to initiate and implement activities with minimal oversight and supervision.
  • Critical thinking; strong interpersonal skills, ability to define situations, document data, and draw conclusions
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in nutrition, public health, or related development studies.
  • Working knowledge in one other language (French, Spanish and/or Arabic) preferred
