Position Summary:
The Institute on Research and Education in Energy, Environment and Water (RENEW) at the University at Buffalo (UB) aims to advance Energy, Water and Environmental Sustainability as a foundation for a regenerative economy through interdisciplinary research cutting across UB’s academic organizations. The institute’s interdisciplinary focus — involving the faculties of the School of Architecture and Planning, College of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Law School, School of Management, School of Public Health and Health Professions and the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences — is designed to foster new collaborations and innovative ideas. The initiative taps the leadership and vision of deans and faculty at these seven schools and colleges. The institute engages over 100 faculty in these seven schools and aims to hire 19 additional faculty in the next several years. Further details can be found here.

The Institute has established five research and educational focus areas that crosscut Energy, Environment, & Water: (1) Next-Generation Materials and Technologies for Energy, Environment & Water Sustainability; (2) Sustainable Urban Environments; (3) Freshwater Coastal Ecosystems and Blue Economy; (4) Environmental Exposures, Genomes and Health; and (5) Climate Change & Socio-Economic Impacts. Each of these highly interdisciplinary focus areas have active participation of faculty from many schools and colleges. The Institute is seeking to fill an Empire Innovation Professor (EIP) faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level in the field of advanced synthesis, design and characterization of 2D materials and devices for its Next-Generation Materials and Technologies for Energy, Environment & Water Sustainability focus area. The senior faculty is expected to be an established leader with a demonstrated track-record of obtaining significant external funding and a reputation of established international leadership in this area. Applicants will have a shared interest in the integrated and interdisciplinary space and positioning of The RENEW Institute. Their research is expected to make a profound impact to these areas cross-cutting renewable energy, clean environment and water.

Applicants must have a creative vision for original research and will be expected to establish an externally funded and internationally recognized research program. Successful applicants will have an established reputation world-wide, a stellar publication record, would have received major national/international awards and will be an elected Fellow of several professional societies. They are expected to mentor junior faculty, mentor and supervise postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate classes. They are expected to lead large interdisciplinary, multi-investigator grant proposals to various federal and state agencies. Possible faculty appointments will be in the appropriate departments comprising the seven schools and colleges which are part of the RENEW institute.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. with significant work experience. All candidates must have a proven record or strong drive toward team research, a strong record of research publication, the ability to attract funding, along with a demonstrated commitment to effective teaching.
