Title: USDA Forest Service Trails Resource Assistant
Start/End Date: September 16th, 2019 - February 21st, 2020
Stipend:  $500/week (+Education Award) 
Term:  23 weeks 
Reports To:  US Forest Service - Cibola National Forest
Location:  Albuquerque, NM 87113
Status:  900-hour AmeriCorps Service Term

Southwest Conservation Corps’ Mission 
It is the mission of the Southwest Conservation Corps to empower individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities and the environment. 
 
Program Overview: 
Join the Southwest Conservation Corps’ Individual Placements team by working to provide a sustainable trails program on National Forest Lands for the American Public!
 
The intern will assist in a variety of activities benefiting the community and the environment. A main project focus will be priority sustainable trails work for the forest. This will include planning for trails to be sustainable, working with youth crews and trails staff on trail maintenance, learning about and facilitating data management for trails, and developing sign plans for trails.
Essential functions and responsibilities include:
  • Trails Planning
  • Work with supervisor and District staff to identify trails planning needs
  • Develop trail planning and design with staff oversight and mentor ship
  • Work with supervisor and District staff to finalize design concepts
  • Training on the following will be included:
  • Forest Service trails materials
  • Field mentorship
  • Training on principles specific to Forest Service
  • Trail Sign Guidelines for Forest
  • Work with supervisor and District staff to identify sign and design styles, understand sign requirements and policy, and conduct site analysis for sign locations
  • Identify signage styles and templates. Work with unit staff to incorporate appropriate aesthetic principles
  • Work with supervisor and District staff to finalize sign and design guidelines
  • Training on the following will be included:
  • Forest Service trail guidance
  • Forest Service Scenery Management Principles
  • Online Trainings
  • Trails Database Management
  • Learn database management needs, processes, steps, etc.
  • Work with staff to input data
  • Conduct field verification of any data needs
  • Training on the following will be included:
  • Forest Service database management trainings
 
General Qualifications: 
 
  • Experience and background in trails and recreation preferred.
The successful applicant must be  self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping.  Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Prior to starting this position a government security background clearance will be required. 
 
Requirements: 
  • HS degree
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
  • Alien Registration Card, INS form I-551
  • A passport indicating that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
  • A departure record ( INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence
  • Driver's License
