CHAI's global malaria program provides direct technical and operational support to countries around the globe to strengthen their malaria programs and reduce the burden of this preventable, treatable disease. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of malaria-related illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards malaria elimination in the long term.
In Nigeria, Uganda, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Rwanda and Kenya, CHAI is implementing programs to address critical barriers that prevent access to and use of malaria commodities for uncomplicated and severe malaria. CHAI provides technical and managerial assistance to national malaria programs in order to accelerate policy changes, ensure sufficient supply commodities, generate demand among health providers and patients and ensure adequate monitoring and troubleshooting mechanisms are in place to track progress. CHAI works closely with governmental staff to identify bottlenecks and potential solutions to improve the collection, reporting, analysis and use of data for programmatic decision-making.
Overview of Role
CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong public health experience and analytical skills to help governments strengthen their surveillance and analytics across West, Central and East Africa. Specific projects will include design and implementation of operational research projects (with strong emphasis on monitoring and evaluation), study protocol oversight and IRB applications, surveillance system assessments, design and implementation of specific surveillance interventions, and data analysis. The individual will work with a diverse set of local and international collaborators, including government programs, academics and public health agencies, and will therefore need to possess strong communication and organizational skills.
There is flexibility on the base location for this position, with a choice of Uganda, Nigeria, or Rwanda.
- Manage analytical projects related to malaria epidemiology, intervention and surveillance
- Manage a small team to conduct analysis of surveillance data and provide efficient support to country teams, government partners and other external stakeholders
- Provide technical supervision, training and ongoing support to other staff members involved in monitoring and evaluation activities or study implementation
- Coordinate quantitative analysis to help programs optimally select and geographically target anti-malaria interventions
- Support programs in monitoring and evaluating the deployment and impact of interventions
- Organize and merge available data, assess its quality and suitability for analysis, and conduct statistical analyses
- Appropriately and concisely visualize data in the form of charts and maps
- Design and facilitate operational research projects, including identification of knowledge gaps, definition of research questions, protocol development, survey and sampling design, formulation of training material, training and monitoring of survey data collectors, and data management, analysis, and dissemination
- Provide analytical support to governmental staff to help strengthen malaria surveillance platforms, including improving data collection, data management, analysis, and data visualization
- Synthesize results and communicate them to national and sub-national government partners to support evidence-based decision making, as well as internally and externally at international venues
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders across government, non-governmental organizations, and academic institutions
- Disseminate findings through high-quality presentations, reports, and publications
- Communicate technical concepts to non-technical partners and CHAI teams
- Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology or related field
- 3-5 years of working experience with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership, including in program management
- Experience in the epidemiological analysis of health data
- Experience in monitoring and evaluation of surveillance systems and/or public health programs
- Experience working and communicating with government officials and other external partners
- Familiarity with disease surveillance and strengthening information systems
- High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet applications
- Statistical and geospatial analysis programming experience (R, SAS, STATA, ArcGIS and/or other relevant software)
- Ability to work independently in remote and unstructured settings and to adapt to new environments and challenges
- Ability to collaborate and operate as part of a multi-cultural team
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills
- Enthusiasm for applying research methods to solve global health problems
- Willingness to travel (30-50% of time)
